It’s common for people to turn to drinking as a way to cope with a range of negative feelings. If you’re feeling alone, drinking can seem like a way to make it through a hard day. It can make the symptoms of conditions such as anxiety and depression worse, leading to more intense feelings of isolation and loneliness. Depression often won’t improve without support from a trained mental health professional. Therapy can have a lot of benefit for anger, too — though it’s certainly possible to learn to control anger on your own.

There are a number of cognitive, neurobiological, and social factors that can influence how alcohol affects aggression. This article discusses some of the facts behind the stereotype of the «angry drunk» and explores the connection between anger and alcohol. Identifying those factors that might contribute to heightened anger when consuming alcohol is important for individuals who have anger issues and those who treat them. Increasingly, research offers answers to determine this interaction. It can get worse over time, especially when combined with regular or heavy alcohol use.

Studies that compared trait and state anger between substance users and non-users were included. Psychoactive substance users was described in the studies according to clinical evaluation based on the DSM-III and DSM-IV criteria for substance use disorder. One study by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism found that people with alcohol use disorder (AUD) were 2.3 times more likely to have major depressive disorder than people who did not have AUD. It’s more likely to worsen negative mood states, along with physical health. You might begin drinking more regularly in order to feel better or forget about those unwanted emotions and memories. Dopamine produces positive emotions that make you feel good and help reinforce your desire to drink, but alcohol affects your central nervous system in other ways, too. Understanding the link between alcohol and depression can help you better manage depression after drinking, or better yet, prevent it from happening in the first place. It’s not uncommon to use alcohol to cope with difficult feelings and experiences.

What causes depression and alcohol use disorder?

If not treated, alcohol use disorder can become a life-long struggle. Almost 30 percent of Americans will experience alcohol use disorder at some point in their lifetimes. Depression may even cause people to begin consuming large amounts of alcohol.

You will be with people who can provide genuine support from a place of understanding. One specific type of therapy that might be helpful for angry depression is emotionally focused therapy. Developed by psychologist Les Greenberg, this type of therapy categorizes anger as either adaptive or non-adaptive. Some evidence suggests that serotonergic dysfunction may be partly to blame for both maladaptive anger and major depression.

When patients have sleep-related concerns such as insomnia, early morning awakening, or fatigue, it is wise to screen them for heavy alcohol use and assess for AUD as needed. If they use alcohol before bedtime, and especially if they shift their sleep timing on weekends compared to weekdays, they may have chronic circadian misalignment. If they report daytime sleepiness, one possible cause is alcohol-induced changes in sleep physiology. PTSD is characterized primarily by alterations in arousal and recurrent intrusive thoughts that follow a traumatic event. Among those with AUD, about 15-30% overall have co-occurring post-traumatic stress disorder, with increased rates of 50-60% among military personnel and veterans.28 The two conditions may worsen each other. Thus, here, too, it’s important to be cognizant of the signs of PTSD in patients with AUD, and vice versa.

Conditions

Drinking can seem like an easy way to cope with difficult emotions in the moment, but it’s generally not effective in the long run. Even if they don’t improve immediately, you’ll probably have an easier time doing something about them when you don’t have to deal with physical symptoms, too. Instead, remind yourself you can do things differently next time. Then, try distracting yourself to help take your mind off how you feel. If you already feel a little low, giving yourself a hard time for overdoing the alcohol probably won’t improve matters. If you wake up feeling miserable after a night of drinking, you don’t have to wait it out.

Inwardly turned anger in depression may reflect an overly critical negative inner voice that makes it hard to move past feelings of shame and low self-worth. This activity provides 0.75 CME/CE credits for physicians, physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists, and psychologists, as well as other healthcare professionals whose licensing boards accept APA or AMA credits. It’s not always clear if depression makes you drink or vice versa. Studies of twins have shown that the same things that lead to heavy drinking in families also make depression more likely.

Does Depression Drive You to Drink Alcohol?

When you have healthy habits in place to cope with unwanted feelings, you’ll probably find it easier to use these strategies to push back against distressing emotions you might experience while drinking. Drinking water may not have a direct impact on feelings of depression, but rehydrating can absolutely help you start feeling better physically. As hangover symptoms begin to subside, the emotional effects may follow. Some people never notice feelings of depression — or any negative effects at all — after drinking moderately. Others might begin feeling depressed or anxious after just one drink.
